Chairman of the Australian Beef Association and wool producer, Mr Bellinger has congratulated The Australian Wool Innovation Board for giving wool producers some long awaited commonsense, with their decision to continue marketing wool from mulesed sheep past the 2010 deadline.
Mr Bellinger said, "The directly elected AWI Directors have spoken on a united front, with Wally Merriman, David Webster, Laurence Modiano and now Chick Olsen sending a clear message to overseas customers -"If you want wool from unmulesed sheep - then pay for it.'
Mr Bellinger said, "I was undecided about the 2% wool levy and many wool producers were waiting to see what this new independent board at AWI would do. I now have no doubt about giving them another 3 years of a 2% levy but I don't want any of that money going to the Peak Council Wool Producers.
He continued, "Wool Producer Australia Council's response to the AWI decision was predictable. Their President Don Hamblin's criticised the AWI Board saying that they lacked discipline and are sending mixed messages to the market. This statement shows how far from reality the Council lives".
Mr Bellinger said that AWI has lead the way in putting pressure on the market to act rather than forcing Australian producers into costly regulation, without a positive return. Funding arrangements for Wool Producers Australia is through our levies. Wool Producers then give funding to the NFF. The arrangement was organised by Canberra to allow proposed government regulations to be passed onto the producers through Peak Councils that act like Judas sheep as they lead their members to destruction. This is what happened to the Beef industry with the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS).
He said, "Wool Producers have the choice of voting on the levy, they were able to directly elect their AWI Board (in contrast to the Meat and Livestock Australia "in house" selection of its board); - however they have no choice on their money going on to funding Wool Producers and the NFF"
I request that the Federal Primary Industry Minister Tony Burke order a poll on whether producers should continue to be compelled to fund the irrelevant Wool Producers Australia, Mr Bellinger said.
